Last updated: 10 October 2026 · Information checked against the official University of Johannesburg admissions page and 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus.
The UJ online application for 2027 is open, but not for much longer. The University of Johannesburg accepts undergraduate applications for the 2027 academic year until 31 October 2026 at 12:00, and UJ has stated clearly that no late applications will be accepted. Applying is free, but you only get two study choices, and you cannot change them after you submit.
This complete guide brings together everything you need for a successful UJ application: key dates, who can apply, how the APS works, the step-by-step application process, residence applications, funding, how to check your status and how to avoid scams. Each section links to a detailed guide in our UJ series.

Important UJ Application Rules
- Applying is free. UJ does not charge an application fee for online applications.
- Only two study choices. You may apply for two undergraduate study choices per academic year.
- No changes after submission. Your choices cannot be amended once submitted, so decide carefully.
- Upgrading Matric? If you are upgrading your Grade 12 results, you must indicate this in your online application.
- GED not accepted. UJ does not accept the American General Education Development (GED) test for undergraduate entry.
- Extended programmes are reserved for applicants without previous tertiary studies.
- Previous studies must be declared. Applicants who studied at another institution must declare those studies on the UJ system within 10 working days of applying and upload an academic record.
Who Can Apply to UJ?
- Grade 12 learners applying with their final Grade 11 results. Final selection uses Grade 12 results released in January.
- Matriculants who already have their final NSC (or IEB/SACAI) results and meet the minimum requirements.
- Applicants upgrading their Grade 12 results.
- Transfer students from other institutions, who must meet both the Grade 12 minimum requirements and faculty selection requirements. See our guide to transferring credits to UJ.
- International applicants, who need a SAQA evaluation of foreign qualifications, a Matriculation Exemption from Universities South Africa (USAf) for degree study, and proof of English proficiency where required.
Step 1: Check Your APS and Admission Requirements
UJ calculates your Admission Point Score (APS) from the achievement ratings of six subjects, excluding Life Orientation, giving a maximum of 42 points. Each programme has a minimum APS plus subject requirements (usually English and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy).
| Example programme (2027) | Minimum APS | Key subjects |
|---|---|---|
| BCom Accounting (CA) | 33 | English 4, Mathematics 5 |
| BCom Accounting / Finance / Economics | 28 | English 4, Mathematics 4 |
| Diploma in Business Information Technology | 22 (Maths) / 24 (Maths Lit) | English 4 |
| Diploma in Accountancy | 22 (Maths) / 24 (Maths Lit) | English 4 |
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place, because spaces are limited. For the full APS table, how to calculate your score and UJ’s official APS calculator, read UJ Admission Requirements and APS 2027.
Step 2: Choose Your Programmes From the 2027 Prospectus
UJ offers qualifications across eight faculties and a college, on four Johannesburg campuses: Auckland Park Kingsway (APK), Auckland Park Bunting Road (APB), Doornfontein (DFC) and Soweto (SWC). Because you only get two choices, use the official 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus to choose one ambitious and one realistic option. See UJ Prospectus 2027, Courses and Faculties.
Step 3: Complete the UJ Online Application
New applicants apply through UJ’s official online application system, linked from the Undergraduate page under Admissions + Aid on uj.ac.za. Returning or internal applicants with an existing UJ student number use the separate returning-applicant login. You will capture your personal details, school results and two study choices, and indicate whether you need residence.
Follow every screen in our step-by-step guide to applying at UJ.
Step 4: Apply for Residence at the Same Time
UJ student accommodation applications follow the same window and close on 31 October 2026 at 12:00. Academic admission does not guarantee a residence place, and you can only stay in a residence on the campus where you study. Read UJ Residence and Student Accommodation 2027.
Step 5: Sort Out Funding Early
- NSFAS: If your household income qualifies, apply to NSFAS by the deadline. See Does UJ accept NSFAS funding?
- Orange Carpet: UJ’s merit programme for top first-time students, with tuition discounts linked to APS (for example, APS 37–39 for 50% of tuition, as listed in the 2027 prospectus).
- Other bursaries and loans: UJ lists merit, leadership, sports and culture bursaries, and study loans through its funding partners.
Step 6: Check Your Application Status
After you apply, UJ emails an acknowledgement with your student number. You can then track your application online and see whether you are provisionally selected, wait-listed, admitted or not admitted. Learn what each status means in How to Check Your UJ Application Status.
Step 7: Get to Know uLink
Once you have a student number, uLink (ulink.uj.ac.za) becomes your main student portal for registration, results, fees, timetables, email and Blackboard. See our UJ uLink Student Portal Guide.
Beware of UJ Application Scams
UJ warns applicants not to trust anyone who promises admission or a study space in exchange for money. Admission is based on academic merit alone, and the application is free. Report suspicious activity to the UJ ethics hotline at uj@thehotline.co.za.
