How to Apply for UJ Residence

  1. Apply for your studies first. Indicate that you need accommodation in your online application. See How to Apply at UJ.
  2. Log in to UJ’s application system with your student number and PIN. Residence applications are handled through the same online system UJ uses for applications and registration.
  3. Complete the residence application before 31 October 2026 at 12:00.
  4. Wait for the outcome. UJ notifies applicants of residence decisions by email, SMS or letter.

Important UJ Residence Rules

  • Admission does not guarantee residence. Being accepted academically does not mean you will get a residence place.
  • Same campus only. You can only stay in a residence on the campus where you study (APK, APB, DFC or Soweto).
  • Deposit: The 2027 prospectus lists a residence deposit of R1,220, charged to your student account when you register online.
  • Day houses are available for students who don’t live in residence, giving them a community and support on campus.

If You Don’t Get a UJ Residence

If your residence application is unsuccessful, UJ’s prospectus points students to private accredited off-campus accommodation through the university’s off-campus accommodation office (POSA), on 011 559 1040. Choosing UJ-accredited accommodation is safer than responding to random adverts.

Tips for Choosing Off-Campus Accommodation

  • Choose UJ-accredited properties where possible.
  • Check transport to your campus and safety at night.
  • If you receive NSFAS, check that the accommodation is NSFAS-accredited and within the allowance.
  • Never pay a deposit before viewing the property or confirming the landlord is genuine.

Funding Your Accommodation

NSFAS can cover accommodation for qualifying students. Read Does UJ accept NSFAS? and remember that NSFAS applications for 2027 have their own deadline.

Avoid Accommodation Scams

Every year, students lose money to fake “UJ residence” or “guaranteed accommodation” offers on social media. UJ residence places are allocated through UJ’s official system only. Don’t pay anyone who promises you a residence room. Report scams to UJ’s ethics hotline at uj@thehotline.co.za.
