Before you submit your UJ application, you need to know two things: your Admission Point Score (APS) and the UJ admission requirements for the programmes you want. This guide explains exactly how UJ calculates APS, shows real minimum APS scores from the 2027 prospectus, and links to UJ’s official APS calculator.
How UJ Calculates Your APS
According to the UJ 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus, your APS is the sum of the achievement ratings of six school subjects, and Life Orientation is not counted. The maximum APS is 42.

Worked Example
The UJ prospectus gives this example: six subjects with marks of 65%, 71%, 61%, 68%, 81% and 86%. Those convert to 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 7 = APS 35.

Important: UJ states that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, because spaces are limited. Popular programmes often admit students well above the minimum.
General UJ Admission Requirements
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC), IEB or SACAI certificate with the appropriate endorsement for degree, diploma or higher certificate study
- The minimum APS for your programme
- The subject requirements, usually English plus Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy at a set level
- Any additional selection requirements set by the faculty
Special Cases
- Grade 12 learners: Selected first on final Grade 11 results, then on final Grade 12 results.
- Upgrading learners: Must indicate upgrading in the application.
- Transfer students: Must meet Grade 12 minimums plus faculty selection requirements, and declare previous studies. See transferring credits to UJ.
- Extended programmes: Only for applicants without previous tertiary studies.
- GED holders: UJ does not accept the American GED for undergraduate entry.
- International applicants: Need a SAQA evaluation, a USAf Matriculation Exemption for degree study, and English proficiency (for example IELTS overall 6) where English was not the medium of instruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum APS for UJ?
It depends on the programme. In the 2027 prospectus, examples range from 22 (with Mathematics) for some diplomas to 33 for BCom Accounting (CA).
Does UJ count Life Orientation in APS?
No. UJ uses six subjects and excludes Life Orientation.
Can I get into UJ with Maths Literacy?
Yes, for many programmes, often with a slightly higher APS. Some programmes, such as BCom Accounting (CA), require pure Mathematics.
Does meeting the APS guarantee a place at UJ?
No. Spaces are limited and selection is competitive.
