Was your SRD grant or another SASSA grant declined? You do not have to accept the decision. This guide explains how a SASSA appeal works, where to lodge it and how to check the outcome.
Wiz Admissions is an independent website. We are not linked to SASSA or the Department of Social Development.
SASSA appeal at a glance
- SRD (R370) appeals: lodged online at srd.sassa.gov.za, in the appeals section.
- Who decides: the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), which falls under the Department of Social Development.
- SRD timing: lodge within 30 days of the decline. Do not wait longer than 90 days.
- Other grants: appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of being told in writing.
- Cost: free. Nobody may charge you to appeal.
- SASSA helpline: 0800 60 10 11 (toll-free).
What Is a SASSA Appeal?
An appeal is a formal request to review a decision. You ask an independent body to look at your grant again.
The body that handles appeals is the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. Most people call it ITSAA. It sits under the Department of Social Development, not under SASSA.
That matters. It means someone outside SASSA checks whether the decision was correct.
Two kinds of appeals
- SRD grant appeals. These are for the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant. They are done online, month by month.
- Permanent grant appeals. These cover grants such as the Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant and Child Support Grant. SASSA must give you written reasons when it refuses one.

Common Reasons SRD Applications Are Declined
SASSA checks every SRD application against other government and bank records. It does this every month. A decline usually means one of those checks found something.
Common decline reasons include:
- Alternative income source identified. Money was found in your bank account, or another income was linked to your ID.
- Existing SASSA grant. You already receive another grant for yourself.
- UIF registered. UIF records show you as employed or receiving UIF.
- NSFAS registered. You are linked to an NSFAS bursary or allowance.
- Identity verification failed. Your details did not match Home Affairs records.
- Age outside range. You do not meet the age rules for the grant.
Sometimes the records are wrong or old. For example, a job may have ended months ago but still shows on UIF. That is exactly when an appeal makes sense.
Should You Appeal?
Appeal if you believe SASSA’s information is wrong. Do not appeal if the reason is true.
| Your situation | Appeal? |
|---|---|
| Old job still shows on UIF, but you are unemployed now | Yes, with proof the job ended |
| Someone paid a once-off amount into your account | Yes, explain what the money was |
| You finished studying but still show as NSFAS-funded | Yes, with proof your funding ended |
| You have a steady income above the SRD limit | No, the decline is likely correct |
| You already get another grant for yourself | No, you cannot get both |
How to Lodge an SRD Appeal Online (Step by Step)
SRD appeals are done on the official SRD website. You need the ID number and cellphone number you used to apply.
- Open the official site. Type srd.sassa.gov.za into your browser yourself. Do not use links sent on WhatsApp or Facebook.
- Go to the appeals section. Look for the option to lodge an appeal.
- Enter your details. Type your ID number and your cellphone number.
- Confirm the PIN. SASSA sends a one-time PIN by SMS. Enter it to continue.
- Choose the month. Select the month that was declined. Each declined month needs its own appeal.
- Give your reason. Explain clearly why the decision is wrong. Keep it short and factual.
- Submit. Save or screenshot any reference or confirmation you receive.
Tips for a strong appeal reason
- Say exactly which check is wrong. For example: “My contract ended in March. I have had no income since then.”
- Name the money if there was a deposit. For example: “R1,500 was a once-off gift from my aunt for a funeral.”
- Keep proof ready, such as a letter from your old employer or bank statements.
- Be honest. Giving false information on a grant application is an offence.
Time Limits for SRD Appeals
Act quickly. The guidance is to appeal within 30 days of seeing a declined status. Appeals lodged after 90 days may not be considered.
Remember that each month is checked separately. If you were declined for three months, you may need three appeals.
How to Check Your SASSA Appeal Status
You check SRD appeal results on the same website.
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and open the appeals section.
- Enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with.
- Enter the PIN sent to you by SMS.
- Check the result for each month you appealed.
SASSA also sends outcomes by SMS.
What the appeal outcomes mean
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pending | Your appeal has not been decided yet. Keep waiting and check again. |
| Approved / upheld | The tribunal agreed with you. Wait for the payment to be released. |
| Declined / dismissed | The tribunal agreed with SASSA. You cannot appeal that month again online. |
How long does it take?
There is no fixed time. Reports suggest SRD appeals often take around 60 to 90 days. Some take longer.
Approved appeals do not pay instantly. After approval, check your SRD status for a payment date.
How to Appeal Other SASSA Grants
This applies to grants like the Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant and Foster Child Grant.
What SASSA must do
If SASSA refuses your grant, it must tell you in writing. The letter must explain why.
What you must do
- Read the refusal letter. Note the reason and the date you were told.
- Gather proof. Collect documents that show the reason is wrong. Examples are medical reports, bank statements or proof of income.
- Lodge the appeal. Appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of being notified. Ask your nearest SASSA office for the appeal form and where to submit it.
- Keep copies. Keep a copy of everything you submit and ask for proof that it was received.
- Follow up. If you hear nothing, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za.
For disability grants, the medical assessment is often the key issue. Bring any new medical reports with your appeal.
What If Your Appeal Fails?
The tribunal’s decision is usually the final step inside the grant system. You still have some options.
- Reapply later. If your situation changes, you can apply again for a new period.
- Get free advice. Organisations such as Black Sash give free paralegal help on grants.
- Court review. A High Court review is possible. It is slow and needs legal help. Legal Aid South Africa may be able to assist.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting too long. Appeal as soon as you see “declined”.
- Appealing only one month. Every declined month needs its own appeal.
- Using a new phone number. Use the number on your application. Update it on srd.sassa.gov.za first if it has changed.
- Vague reasons. “I need the money” does not explain why the check was wrong.
- Reapplying instead of appealing. A new application does not fix a declined month.
- Using fake websites. Many copycat sites look official. Only addresses ending in .gov.za belong to government.
Scam Warning
Scammers target people who are desperate for their grant. Watch out for these signs:
- Someone offers to “fast-track” your appeal for a fee. Appeals are free.
- A WhatsApp or Facebook page asks for your ID number, PIN or OTP.
- A message tells you to click a link to “unlock” your grant.
- A person claims to work for SASSA and asks for airtime or money.
SASSA will never ask for your bank PIN or card CVV. Never share an OTP with anyone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appeal a SASSA decision for free?
Yes. SRD appeals and permanent grant appeals cost nothing. Anyone asking for money is not legitimate.
How long do I have to appeal an SRD decline?
Aim to appeal within 30 days of the decline. Appeals lodged after 90 days may be rejected.
Do I need to appeal every month separately?
Yes, for the SRD grant. Each month is assessed on its own, so each declined month needs its own appeal.
Will I get back pay if my appeal is approved?
If an SRD appeal is approved for a month, that month can be paid. Check your status for the payment date.
Who do I contact if my appeal is stuck?
Call SASSA’s toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11. You can also email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za or visit a SASSA office.

Conclusion
A declined grant is not always the end. If SASSA’s records are wrong, an appeal gives you a fair second look.
Act fast, appeal every declined month, and give a clear reason. Use only srd.sassa.gov.za and official SASSA offices.
