myUNISA Student Portal — How to Log In, Register and Use It

If you are going to study through the University of South Africa (UNISA), one website will matter more than any other during your studies: myUNISA. This is UNISA’s official online student portal, and once you are admitted, almost everything you do as a student — from registering modules to submitting assignments and checking your results — happens there. For students applying from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, or anywhere else in Africa outside South Africa, myUNISA is also your main link to the university, since you will rarely if ever set foot on a UNISA campus.

This guide explains what myUNISA is, how to get access as a first-time applicant, how to log in and set up your account, what to do if you forget your password, and the key things you will use the portal for once you are a registered student.

What Is myUNISA and Why Does Every Student Need It?

myUNISA is the University of South Africa’s central online student portal, accessed through the university’s website at unisa.ac.za. It functions as your virtual campus: your study material, your assignment submission system, your official communication channel, and your record of results all live inside it.

Because UNISA is an open distance learning (ODL) institution — Africa’s largest — it does not rely on physical class registration or notice boards the way a traditional campus does. Instead, UNISA pushes almost all administrative and academic activity through myUNISA and its linked tools. If you are not comfortable logging in and navigating this portal, you will struggle to keep up with deadlines, tutorial letters, and exam information, so it is worth getting familiar with it as early as possible.

Applicant Access vs. Registered Student Access

It is important to understand that “myUNISA access” looks slightly different depending on where you are in the admissions journey.

Before You Have a Student Number (Prospective Applicant)

If you have not yet applied to UNISA, you do not have a myUNISA student profile yet. When you submit an online application for the 2027 intake (applications for undergraduate, honours and postgraduate diploma programmes open 17 August 2026 and close 9 October 2026), the university creates an application profile for you, tied to the reference or application number you receive. At this stage you can typically check your application status online, but you do not yet have full myUNISA student login access with a permanent student number.

For the full step-by-step application process, see our guide on how to apply to UNISA for 2027.

After Admission and Registration (Registered Student)

Once you are admitted and you complete registration for your qualification and modules, UNISA issues you a permanent student number. This student number becomes your key to myUNISA. From this point forward, you log in with your student number and a password, rather than any temporary application reference. If you have not registered yet, our UNISA registration guide for 2027 walks through that process in detail.

How to Claim and Activate Your myUNISA Account for the First Time

Once you have a student number, you need to “claim” your myUNISA login before you can use it. This is a one-time activation step. Based on UNISA’s own guidance, the general process works like this:

1. Go to the myUNISA portal starting point at my.unisa.ac.za/portal (accessible via the myUNISA link on unisa.ac.za).
2. Look for and select the option to claim your Unisa login (sometimes labelled something like “Claim Unisa Login” or “Activate my account”).
3. Enter your student number when prompted.
4. Enter the personal details that match what you supplied when you registered — this typically includes details such as your surname, full names, date of birth, and your South African ID number or passport/foreign ID number, since UNISA verifies you against your original registration record.
5. Read through any terms, guidelines, or acceptable-use notices presented, and confirm/accept them.
6. The system will generate a password for you on screen. This same password is used for both your myUNISA login and your myLife student email account, so copy or note it down immediately — it is usually shown only once.
7. Use the “login” link to sign into myUNISA with your student number and this new password.
8. Separately, activate your myLife student email account. Your myLife address follows the format studentnumber@mylife.unisa.ac.za. Note that a newly claimed myLife account can take up to 24 hours to become fully active.
9. Always log out properly from both myUNISA and myLife when you finish, and confirm you see a proper sign-out/confirmation message before closing the browser.

Your myLife email is important beyond just having an inbox — UNISA states it is the only email address it officially recognises for correspondence with students, including tutorial letters, exam timetables, results, and financial statements. Even if you have a personal Gmail or Yahoo address, make sure you check your myLife account regularly, or set it to forward to an email you check daily.

How to Log In to myUNISA After Activation

Once your account is claimed and active, logging in going forward is straightforward:

1. Visit unisa.ac.za and find the myUNISA login link, or go directly to the myUNISA login page.
2. Enter your full student number exactly as issued by UNISA (a common login error is typing the number with spaces, extra characters, or in the wrong format — enter it exactly as it appears on your official UNISA correspondence).
3. Enter your password.
4. Select the login/sign-in button.

From the myUNISA homepage after login, you will typically see menu options for things like your registered modules, assignments, announcements, and your student administration tools. The exact layout can change as UNISA updates its systems, so rather than memorising specific button positions, get comfortable exploring the main menu categories — most core functions (registration, assignments, exams, results) are grouped logically under clearly labelled tabs.

How to Reset a Forgotten myUNISA Password

If you forget your password, do not create a new application or contact the university to “start over” — myUNISA has a self-service reset option built into the login screen:

1. On the myUNISA login page, look for a link such as “Forgotten Unisa Password” (sometimes shown near the login fields when a login attempt fails).
2. Enter your student number and continue.
3. Verify your identity by entering your surname, full names, date of birth, and either your South African ID number or your passport/foreign ID number — whichever you originally registered with.
4. Submit the form and follow the on-screen instructions to set a new password.

Two things to keep in mind: first, the identification details you enter must match exactly what UNISA has on file from your registration, so double-check spelling and date formats. Second, because your myUNISA and myLife passwords are linked, resetting one generally resets your access to both — so once you reset your password, log into both systems again with the new credentials and update any saved passwords on your devices or apps.

What You Can Do on myUNISA as a Registered Student

Once you are logged in, myUNISA is where you manage nearly your entire academic life at UNISA. Below is a summary of the main functions students rely on.

Because so much depends on timely access — assignment deadlines, exam admission, and results release dates are strict — you should log into myUNISA regularly (ideally a few times a week during active semesters), rather than only when you remember you have an assignment due.

Mobile Access: The Unisa Student App

UNISA also offers a mobile app that gives students access to a number of administrative functions from a phone, in addition to the browser-based myUNISA site. UNISA has promoted a “Unisa Student App” (and a related “myModules” app used specifically for accessing module content within the Moodle-based learning environment) available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. These apps are useful for students who rely mainly on mobile data or a smartphone rather than a computer, which is common for many students across Africa. That said, for tasks like formal module registration or submitting certain document types, you may still find it easier to use a full web browser on a computer, so it is worth having both options available if you can.

Common myUNISA Login Problems and How to Troubleshoot Them

• Account not yet activated: If you have just registered and try to log in with just any password, it will not work — you must first go through the “claim your login” activation process described above using your student number and personal details.
• Incorrect student number format: Make sure you are entering your student number exactly as issued, with no extra spaces or characters, and that you are not confusing it with your application/reference number from before you were admitted.
• Mismatched personal details: When claiming your account or resetting your password, the surname, date of birth, and ID/passport number you enter must match your original UNISA registration record exactly. Small differences (e.g., a nickname instead of your legal name) can cause verification to fail.
• Browser compatibility issues: Older or unusual browsers can sometimes cause display or login problems on university web portals generally. If a page will not load properly or a button does not respond, try a recent version of a mainstream browser (such as Chrome or Firefox), clear your browser cache, or try a different device or network.
• Slow or unstable internet connection: Because myUNISA is used by hundreds of thousands of students, and connectivity varies across the continent, pages can sometimes load slowly, especially close to registration or assignment deadlines. Try again during off-peak hours, or use a more stable connection where possible, and avoid waiting until the very last day to submit anything.
• Forgotten myLife email password: Since your myUNISA and myLife passwords are linked, resetting your myUNISA password through the official reset process should also update your myLife email access — log in again with the new password on both.

If you have gone through these troubleshooting steps and still cannot get into your account, do not guess repeatedly, since multiple failed attempts can sometimes lock an account temporarily. Instead, use UNISA’s official student support channels — the “Contact us” section on unisa.ac.za lists the current student call centre and support email options for myUNISA and myLife issues. Always verify the exact current contact details on the official UNISA website, as these can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access myUNISA before I have a student number?

Not in the full sense. Before you are admitted and registered, you interact with UNISA mainly through your application profile, where you can track your application status. Full myUNISA student portal access, using a student number and password, becomes available once you have registered.

What is the difference between myUNISA and myLife?

myUNISA is the main student administration portal (registration, assignments, results, and so on). myLife is your official UNISA student email account, in the format studentnumber@mylife.unisa.ac.za. Both share the same login password, but they are accessed through separate pages, and myLife is UNISA’s only recognised channel for official email communication with students.

How long does it take for my myUNISA account to be ready after registering?

Once your registration is finalised, you should be able to claim your myUNISA login using your new student number. Note that your myLife email specifically can take up to 24 hours after activation to become fully usable, so do not panic if it is not instantly accessible.

I am outside South Africa — can I still use myUNISA normally?

Yes. myUNISA is designed for a student base spread across Africa and beyond, since UNISA is a distance learning institution. You will need a reasonably stable internet connection to log in, download study material, and submit assignments, but there is no requirement to be physically in South Africa to use the portal.

What should I do if I entered the wrong ID or passport number when registering, and now cannot verify my identity to reset my password?

This type of data-correction issue usually cannot be resolved through the self-service reset form, since the system checks your entry against your original registration record. In this case, you will need to contact UNISA’s official student support channels directly (listed under “Contact us” on unisa.ac.za) so staff can verify your identity and correct your record.

Do I need a specific student number format to log in?

You should always use the exact student number issued to you by UNISA on your official admission or registration correspondence, entered without extra spaces or symbols. If you are unsure which number is your student number versus an application reference number, check the official communication UNISA sent you, or contact student support to confirm.
