WASSCE results use a letter-and-number grading scale rather than a percentage. Here’s what each grade means and which ones actually count toward admission.

Why “Credit” Matters More Than “Pass”
This is the single most important thing to understand about WASSCE grades: a D7 or E8 is technically a “pass,” but it is not a credit. Most universities, polytechnics, and nursing/teacher training colleges in Ghana specifically require a minimum of C6 in a set number of subjects (typically six, including English and Mathematics) — a D7 in one of those subjects will not satisfy that requirement even though the exam slip shows it as a “pass.”
How Grades Convert to Aggregate Points
Each grade also carries a points value used to calculate your aggregate, where a lower number is better:
- A1 = 1 point
- B2 = 2 points
- B3 = 3 points
- C4 = 4 points
- C5 = 5 points
- C6 = 6 points
- D7 = 7 points
- E8 = 8 points
- F9 = 9 points

What to Do If You Have a D7, E8, or F9
- In a required core subject: you can register as a private candidate to resit that specific subject in a future WASSCE sitting, rather than repeating the whole exam.
- In a non-core elective: as long as your six best subjects (including the required core subjects) meet the credit requirement, a weak grade in an unrelated elective usually doesn’t block admission.
- If you believe a grade is wrong: you can apply for remarking of that specific paper through your school or a WAEC office within the deadline WAEC publishes alongside the results.
