Festive season jobs are one of the easiest ways to get a foot in the door in South African retail. Every year from October to December, supermarkets, clothing stores and pharmacies take on extra staff to cope with Black Friday and the December rush. Many of these posts are short contracts, but they give you real work experience, a reference and, for some people, a permanent job in the new year.
This guide lists the retailers that hire for the festive season, what the jobs pay, what you need, how to apply on each company’s official careers page, and how to avoid the fake “December jobs” posts that spread on Facebook and WhatsApp every year.
When Do Retailers Hire Festive Season Staff?
Most retailers start advertising seasonal and temporary posts in October and November, so that new staff are trained before Black Friday (the last Friday of November) and the December holidays. By early December, most stores have already filled their seasonal posts. If you want a festive job, apply now, not in December.
Seasonal contracts usually run from November or early December until early January. Some retailers keep their best seasonal workers on as part-time or permanent staff.

How Much Do Festive Season Jobs Pay?
Pay depends on the retailer, the role and the number of hours you work. What is guaranteed by law is the National Minimum Wage of R30.23 per hour, which has applied since 1 March 2026. No retailer may pay you less than this per ordinary hour.
As a rough guide, a seasonal contract of 120 hours a month at the minimum wage works out to about R3,628 a month before deductions. Many retailers pay more than the minimum, and you may earn extra for Sunday and public holiday shifts, according to your contract and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
Requirements for Festive Season Retail Jobs
- South African ID (or a valid work permit)
- Grade 12 (Matric) is preferred by most retailers, especially for cashier posts, but some packer and merchandiser roles accept lower grades
- Basic maths and communication skills
- Willingness to work weekends, public holidays and long shifts in December
- Living close to the store, so you can get to work early and leave late
- Customer service or till experience is an advantage, but many seasonal posts are open to first-time job seekers
How to Apply for Festive Season Jobs (Step-by-Step)
- Make a short list of stores near you. Seasonal jobs are local, so focus on shops you can reach easily.
- Prepare a one-page CV with your contact details, school results, any work or volunteer experience, and two references.
- Create profiles on the official careers portals of the retailers above. Many retailers only accept applications through their own portals.
- Search for “seasonal”, “temporary”, “flexi” or “Christmas casual” roles and apply for every suitable post near you.
- For independent stores such as SPAR, ask the store manager in person whether they are taking on festive staff, and leave a copy of your CV.
- Keep your phone on. Seasonal hiring moves fast, and stores often call candidates for interviews within days.
How to Turn a Festive Job Into a Permanent Job
- Arrive on time for every shift, including the difficult ones on 24 and 31 December.
- Learn the till, stock and returns systems quickly.
- Tell your supervisor you are interested in staying on after January.
- Ask for a written reference when your contract ends, even if you are not kept on.
Fake Festive Job Adverts: Warning Signs
Every year, fake “December jobs” adverts appear on Facebook, WhatsApp and TikTok. Watch for these warning signs:
- You are asked to pay for an application, training, uniform or “registration”. Genuine retailers never charge job seekers.
- The advert has no store, no closing date and no official link, only “comment YES” or “send your ID on WhatsApp”.
- The link goes to a short link or a free website instead of the retailer’s own careers page.
- The pay sounds too good to be true for a no-experience post.
If you cannot find the job on the retailer’s official careers page, do not apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply for festive season jobs?
In October and November. Most retailers fill seasonal posts before Black Friday, so applying in December is usually too late.
Do I need experience for a festive season job?
Not always. Many seasonal packer, merchandiser and sales assistant posts are open to first-time job seekers, although till or customer service experience helps.
How much do seasonal retail workers earn?
At least the National Minimum Wage of R30.23 per hour (from 1 March 2026). Many retailers pay more, and pay depends on your hours and contract.
Can a festive job become permanent?
Yes. Retailers often keep reliable seasonal staff on as part-time or permanent workers in the new year.
Do I have to pay to apply?
No. Genuine retailers never charge application or training fees. Anyone asking for money is running a scam.
