A clear CV can be the difference between an interview call and silence. South African recruiters often scan a CV in under a minute, so simple beats fancy. Below is a free CV template you can copy, paste and fill in, plus tips for matriculants and people with no work experience.
South African CV at a glance
- Length: 1 to 2 pages for most entry-level and mid-level jobs.
- Format: Send as a PDF unless the advert asks for Word.
- Must include: Contact details, education, skills, experience and references.
- Leave out: Your full ID number, bank details and a photo (unless asked).
- Cost: Free. You never need to pay someone to “submit” your CV.
What a South African CV Should Include
Recruiters look for the same basic sections. Keep them in this order.
| Section | What to include | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Personal details | Name, phone, email, town or suburb, languages | Use a professional email address |
| Profile | 2–3 sentences about who you are and the job you want | Change it for each job |
| Skills | 5–8 practical skills | Match words from the job advert |
| Work experience | Job title, employer, dates, duties and results | Newest job first |
| Education | Matric, tertiary studies, short courses | Include the year and institution |
| Extra activities | Volunteering, church, sport, leadership roles | Very useful if you have no work experience |
| References | Two or three people who can vouch for you | Ask them first |

How to Fill In the Template: Step by Step
- Read the job advert first. Underline the skills and requirements it lists.
- Write your personal details. Check your cellphone number twice. One wrong digit means no call.
- Write a short profile. Mention the job you want and two or three strengths.
- Pick skills that match the advert. If it says “Excel”, list Excel if you can use it.
- List experience, newest first. Use action words such as “served”, “organised”, “sold” or “trained”.
- Add numbers where you can. For example, “served 50 customers a shift” is stronger than “served customers”.
- Add education and courses. Include free online courses you have finished.
- Add references. Ask permission and confirm their numbers still work.
- Proofread. Read it aloud or ask a friend to check spelling.
- Save as a PDF. Name the file clearly, like “Thandi-Mokoena-CV.pdf”.
CV Tips for Matriculants and People With No Experience
No work history? You still have plenty to show. Focus on what you have done, not what you have not.
Use these instead of work experience
- School leadership: Prefect, class rep or club organiser.
- Volunteering: Church, community projects, soup kitchens or clinics.
- Informal work: Helping in a family spaza shop, tutoring, car washing or babysitting.
- Short courses: Computer literacy, customer service or free online courses. See our free Microsoft AI courses guide.
- Programmes: Learnerships, internships and youth programmes. See our learnerships 2026 guide.
Put education higher up
If you have no work experience, move Education above Work Experience. Show your best matric subjects.
Write a strong profile
Example: “Motivated 2025 matriculant with good English and basic computer skills. I enjoy helping people and learn quickly. Looking for an entry-level retail or call centre job.”
What to Leave Off Your CV
- Your full ID number. Give it only when a verified employer asks for it during hiring. This reduces identity fraud risk.
- Bank details. These are only needed after you are hired.
- A photo, unless the advert asks for one.
- Marital status, religion or health details. These are not needed to judge your skills.
- Salary history, unless asked.
- Long paragraphs. Use bullet points.
Common CV Mistakes
- Spelling mistakes and SMS language.
- Unprofessional email addresses.
- Using fancy fonts, colours or graphics that are hard to read.
- Sending the same CV to every job without changes.
- Gaps with no explanation. A short note, like “Caring for a family member”, is fine.
- Lying about qualifications. Employers can verify them, and it can get you fired later.
- Forgetting a cover note when the advert asks for one.
Short Email Cover Note (Copy and Paste)
When you email your CV, do not leave the message empty. Use a short note like this one and change the details.

Where to Send Your CV
- Company websites: For example, see our Shoprite vacancies, Capitec vacancies and Transnet vacancies guides.

Scam Warning
Never pay anyone to “place” your CV, “fast-track” your application or buy an application form. Real employers do not charge job seekers. Be careful when a “recruiter” contacts you only by WhatsApp and asks for your ID copy, bank details or money. Check the company’s official website before sending any documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my CV be?
One to two pages is enough for most jobs. Senior or academic jobs may need more.
Should I put my ID number on my CV?
It is safer not to. Your CV may be shared widely. Give your ID number when a verified employer needs it.
Do I need a photo on my CV?
No, unless the advert asks for one. Recruiters care more about your skills.
Should I use Word or PDF?
Use PDF unless the employer asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout neat on any phone or computer.
Do I need a cover letter?
Send one when the advert asks for it. A short, tailored cover note can also help you stand out by email.
