What Is the Basic Education Employment Initiative?

The BEEI is a government programme that places unemployed young people in public schools. It is widely called the “teacher assistant” programme.

It started in 2020. It forms part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which was set up to create jobs after COVID-19.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) runs it with the Department of Employment and Labour. The programme ran in five phases.

Roles in the programme

Despite the name, assistants are not teachers. Phase 5 roles included:

  • Curriculum or Education Assistants, who support teachers in class.
  • Reading Champions, who help learners with reading.
  • E-Cadres, who support the use of computers and ICT.
  • Care and Support Assistants.
  • Sport and Enrichment Assistants.
  • Laboratory and Workshop Assistants.
  • General School Assistants, including handyman work.

Is Teacher Assistant Phase 6 Open in 2026?

No. As of October 2026, there is no official Phase 6 intake.

Here is the timeline from official and news sources:

Date What happened
22 April to 9 May 2025 Phase 5 applications open on SAYouth.mobi
June 2025 Phase 5 assistants start work in schools
30 November 2025 Phase 5 ends
December 2025 DBE confirms there is no extension into December
March 2026 DBE close-out meeting for Phase 5 refers to plans for a future Phase 6
May 2026 DBE warns that “Phase 6” adverts on Facebook are fake
August 2026 Daily Maverick reports Phase 6 on hold while funding is unresolved

Why is Phase 6 on hold?

The main reason is money. Reports say the 2026 national Budget cut the BEEI allocation sharply. What is left mainly covers administration, not new posts.

Funding from the UIF is also reported to depend on an audit of Phase 5 being completed.

The DBE has said official updates will only come through its own channels. Until then, treat any “applications open” post with suspicion.

How Applications Worked in Phase 5

If a new phase opens, the process may be similar. Here is how it worked in 2025.

  1. Register on SAYouth.mobi. Create a free profile with your ID number and cellphone number. The site was zero-rated, so it did not use your data.
  2. Complete your profile. Add your education, location and skills.
  3. Find the school opportunities. Browse the BEEI posts listed for schools near you.
  4. Apply for one or more posts. Choose roles that match your qualifications.
  5. Wait for a school to contact you. Selected candidates signed contracts on their first day at school.

Schools were asked to give preference to young people from their own communities. Young women and youth with disabilities were encouraged to apply.

Who Qualified in Phase 5?

Requirements could change in any future phase. In Phase 5 the main rules were:

  • Aged 18 to 34. Applicants had to be turning 35 no later than the end of March 2026.
  • Unemployed.
  • Living near the school, in the same community.
  • Willing to attend training provided during the programme.

Some roles had extra requirements. Education Assistant roles generally asked for a matric. General School Assistant roles were more open.

How Much Did Teacher Assistants Earn?

Phase 5 assistants received a stipend of R4,000 a month. The contract ran for about six months.

Stipends were paid through the Industrial Development Corporation. UIF contributions were deducted. Because of this, some assistants could claim UIF after their contracts ended.

Pay for any Phase 6 has not been announced. Do not trust posts quoting a new amount.

How to Prepare for a Future Intake

Past application windows were short. Phase 5 was open for less than three weeks. Being ready early gives you an advantage.

Documents to keep ready

  • A valid South African ID.
  • Your matric certificate or latest school report.
  • Any other certificates, such as short courses or first aid.
  • A simple, up-to-date CV.
  • Proof of address near the schools where you want to work.

Skills that help

  • Basic computer skills, especially for E-Cadre roles.
  • Reading aloud and helping children read.
  • Coaching sport or running school clubs.
  • Practical skills like painting, repairs or gardening.

Volunteering at a local school, church or community centre also shows you can work with children.

What You Can Do While You Wait

You do not have to sit and wait for Phase 6. Here are useful steps now:

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Believing “Phase 6 now open” posts. Many are fake or click-bait.
  • Applying on copycat websites. Real applications ran on SAYouth.mobi, not on random blogs.
  • Sharing your ID number widely. Only give it on trusted official platforms.
  • Lying about your age or status. This can get you removed from the programme.
  • Waiting and doing nothing. Apply for other jobs and learnerships in the meantime.

Scam Warning

In May 2026 the DBE warned about fake “Teacher Assistant Phase 6 2026 Intake” adverts. Africa Check also flagged these posts.

Signs of a fake teacher assistant advert:

  • It asks you to pay an application, registration or training fee.
  • It asks for personal information on an unofficial website.
  • It says applications will “open soon” but gives no official link.
  • It sends you through many pages full of pop-up adverts.
  • It asks you to share the post to “qualify”.

Real government job programmes do not charge you to apply. Check news on education.gov.za and the DBE’s official social media pages.

Conclusion

The Basic Education Employment Initiative has not opened a Phase 6 in 2026. Funding is the main obstacle.

Keep your SAYouth.mobi profile ready, watch official DBE channels and ignore paid “applications”. Meanwhile, apply for other youth jobs and learnerships.
